I've already had a couple of interesting experiences with the Moroccans I've interacted with thus far:
1) On the plane to Casablanca, I sat in the same row as a Moroccan man. We were given dinner around 11 PM; the options were chicken or beef. I got chicken, and the man did as well but the meal did not exactly look appetizing when he opened it. He asked me what I preferred after seeing my unopened container, and I said chicken - I suppose he assumed that mine was different/would look better so he grabbed my chicken meal and switched it for his without further questioning! He soon discovered that I asked for the same thing, of course. We chatted for a little after and he seemed nice but his forwardness was definitely unexpected.
2) When I was waiting for my luggage at the airport, there was an airport employee peeking out of where the luggage was appearing and smiling at me. He then tried to start a conversation with me in English, asking if I needed help. I said no and tried talking to him in Arabic, but he said "English please", and I replied "You don't know Arabic?" in Arabic - to which he relented and finally talked to me in Arabic. We had a brief conversation about his job at the airport before I realized that there weren't many bags left on the luggage track and one of mine was still missing. I tried to excuse myself and he then says "I don't like you" with a smile on his face. I was surprised - after a five-minute conversation he either a) genuinely didn't like me or b) was trying to get a rise out of me so I would stay and talk more! I didn't have time to ask why and tried to excuse myself because it didn't seem like he wanted me to go. Thankfully I found my bag and was able to avoid getting separated from my group.
Right now we're in the new center waiting for our host families to come. I didn't get my family from last year - Anna (my friend from Maryland, we met while living on the same floor freshman year!) and I will be together with an older couple in Hamriyya (the new part of the city). We apparently will be in a "nice villa" and have our own floor with separate bedrooms and a private bathroom! This will be a completely new experience, as I lived in an older part of the city last year in a shared bedroom and bathroom, and I'm really looking forward to being close to cafes and the train station. Here's to a great start to the year!
